Nigerian businesses have been urged to shift their attention from measuring activity to evaluating measurable revenue outcomes, as marketing strategist David Alonge warned that many organisations remain occupied with operational tasks without clearly understanding what truly drives business growth.

Alonge made the observation in a business leadership commentary, using the analogy of two whiteboards in a managing director’s office to illustrate what he described as a common challenge confronting many organizations .

According to him, one whiteboard was filled with departmental targets, campaigns, deadlines and operational tasks, while another displayed only a single question:

“Where does our revenue actually come from?”

He argued that despite extensive planning and constant activity, many organisations struggle to identify the specific channels, departments or initiatives that generate sustainable income.

Alonge observed that responsibility for revenue generation is often unclear within organisations, with sales teams attributing lead generation to marketing departments, while marketers point to referrals and outreach efforts.

The result, he noted, is that management may find it difficult to determine which business functions are directly contributing to financial performance.

“Being busy doesn’t equate to being profitable. An overflowing calendar doesn’t necessarily mean a thriving pipeline”, he stated.

He stressed that while productivity remains important, business leaders must consistently evaluate whether daily activities translate into measurable commercial outcomes.

Drawing from his experience conducting business audits, Alonge said one of the most revealing questions he asks organisations is not merely what employees are doing, but what those activities are producing.

According to him, organizations should regularly assess whether investments in marketing, sales and operations are generating returns capable of sustaining long-term growth.

He advised business owners and executives to begin each planning cycle by asking their teams a fundamental question:

“Where does our revenue actually come from?”

Alonge suggested that uncertainty or silence in response should be treated as an indication that greater strategic clarity and performance measurement are needed.

Business analysts have increasingly emphasised that sustainable organisations rely on clear performance indicators, customer acquisition metrics and measurable return on investment rather than simply tracking workloads or completed tasks.

Industry experts argue that aligning marketing, sales and operational functions with defined revenue objectives enables organisations to improve efficiency, strengthen accountability and make better-informed strategic decisions.

Alonge encouraged business leaders to ensure that weekly meetings and operational reviews focus not only on targets and schedules but also on the underlying drivers of profitability.

He maintained that organizations capable of identifying and strengthening their genuine revenue sources are better positioned to achieve sustainable growth in an increasingly competitive business environment.
