The Ogun state traditional institution has been thrown into mourning following the death of the Onipokia of Ipokia kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Oba Yisa Sola Adeniyi Olaniyan, Orijajoogun I, who joined his ancestors at the age of 55.

The monarch died on Saturday at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston, Texas in the United States, following complications from surgery after a brief illness, according to palace sources.

Oba Olaniyan was the 46th Onipokia of the historic kingdom.

He emerged as king in August 2020 after a unanimous selection by the Iwaye Dodo Ruling House, which presented eight princes for the stool.

His installation was delayed for 15 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a political transition in Ogun State.

He received the staff of office from Governor Dapo Abiodun on August 12, 2020, becoming the first monarch installed under the current administration.

His coronation held on September 5, 2020, the same day he marked his 50th birthday.

Throughout his six-year reign, Oba Olaniyan focused on safeguarding Ipokia’s cultural heritage.

He also championed education, youth empowerment, community growth and stronger relations with Nigerians living abroad.

Prior to his ascension, the late monarch had a distinguished career in the United States.

His professional background spanned criminal justice, aviation, oil and gas and renewable energy.

He also founded the Afro-Heritage Broadcasting and Entertainment Awards, AHBEA, a platform created to promote African culture and entertainment.

Mourning rites are underway at the palace in line with tradition.
