2027 Power Play: Ogun Politics Enters Delicate Phase Amid Abiodun–Yayi Loyalty Test

Fresh indications have emerged of deepening political tension within the Ogun State power structure, as Governor Dapo Abiodun is reportedly preparing to identify and sanction members of his administration perceived to be aligning with Senator Solomon Adeola (Yayi) ahead of the 2027 governorship succession battle.

Multiple political sources familiar with developments in the Governor’s inner circle disclosed to Premier World News that the situation has escalated into what insiders describe as an unofficial loyalty test, following the scheduling of parallel high-profile events by both political figures on Saturday, January 3, 2026.

According to the sources, Senator Yayi has invited key stakeholders, political appointees and senior figures within the Abiodun administration to his 2025 Thanksgiving and End-of-Year event, slated for 11:00am at the Cathedral Church of Christ, Ona Ola, Ilaro, with a reception to follow at the Asade Agunloye Pavilion Ground, Ilaro-Yewa.

In a striking overlap, Governor Abiodun has scheduled the commissioning of two major state projects, the Laderin Prof. Wole Soyinka Train Station and the Sagamu–Ayepe Road for the same day.

An official invitation circulated from the Office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) confirms the governor’s engagements, with the commissioning of the train station fixed for 10:30am at Laderin, followed by the Sagamu–Ayepe Road commissioning at 2:00pm.

Political observers say the timing is unlikely to be coincidental.

“This is shaping up as a quiet but decisive political standoff. Those who attend Yayi’s event instead of the governor’s will be clearly marked”, a source within the administration told Premier World News.

Succession Politics and Cabinet Unease:

The growing friction is linked to succession calculations ahead of 2027, with Senator Yayi widely believed to be nursing gubernatorial ambitions.

Sources allege that the senator has cultivated influence among appointees and political stakeholders through strategic patronage, a development said to have unsettled the governor.

Insiders describe Governor Abiodun as uneasy and opposed to what he reportedly views as an attempt to leverage his own cabinet and political machinery against him.

“There is a sense that lines are being drawn. “No sitting governor will tolerate a parallel power centre operating within his government”, said a political analyst in Abeokuta.

Historical Echoes and Political Sensitivities:

Analysts have drawn parallels with the closing period of Otunba Gbenga Daniel’s administration, when divided loyalties among appointees reportedly weakened central authority, while the concern, observers note is that a similar pattern could emerge if internal discipline is not enforced.

Complicating the matter further are lingering political sentiments around Senator Yayi’s roots in Ogun State, with critics questioning his claim to local political identity, an issue that has continued to surface in succession debates, particularly in Yewa and broader Ogun politics.

A Test of Control:

While no official statement has been issued by the governor or the senator, insiders insist that attendance or absence at Saturday’s events will carry political consequences.

As Ogun creeps closer to the 2027 electoral cycle, the unfolding drama signals that the battle for succession has quietly begun, with loyalty, influence and control now central to the contest.
