Abeokuta, Ogun State, The Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, Comrade Bunmi Adigun, has described the Chairman of the Council, Comrade Akinwale Alade Olanrewaju, as “a blessing God gave to Ogun NUJ,” as the union leader marks his 50th birthday.
In a goodwill message reflecting on the state of journalism in Ogun State and the leadership journey of the NUJ chairman, Adigun said Olanrewaju’s emergence marked a turning point in the history of the Council, following a turbulent period that once threatened its unity and professional stability.
Ogun State, widely regarded as the cradle of journalism in Nigeria due to the historic publication of Iwe Iroyin, has long occupied a strategic place in the nation’s media evolution.

According to Adigun, the state had previously witnessed steady growth in professional capacity, institutional respect and public trust within the media sector before internal crises disrupted the progress.
“There was a time when bickering replaced brotherhood and colleagues who once stood shoulder to shoulder became adversaries. That dark chapter cost lives, drained morale and forced many promising journalists into premature retirement”, Adigun recalled.
He noted, however, that the restoration of peace and democratic order within the Union paved the way for a leadership renewal, culminating in the election of Comrade Olanrewaju, a development he described as divinely timed.
“History teaches us that after every night comes the dawn. At that defining moment, Comrade Akinwale Alade Olanrewaju emerged, a man clearly mandated to lead, heal wounds and rebuild trust”, Adigun stated.
Since assuming office, the NUJ Secretary said the chairman’s leadership style has been firm yet humane, decisive yet inclusive and firmly rooted in the core values that once made the Ogun NUJ a reference point nationally.
Under Olanrewaju’s leadership, the Council has recorded notable achievements, including the reconciliation of aggrieved members, strengthening of welfare structures, improved engagement with government and key stakeholders, renewed emphasis on professional training and the restoration of the Union’s public image.
“Smiles have returned to the faces of members. Confidence has been renewed, and the spirit of camaraderie has replaced suspicion. The Union once again feels like home”, Adigun said.
Beyond the internal affairs of the NUJ, Adigun noted that Olanrewaju’s influence has extended to the wider society through the promotion of responsible journalism, ethical standards and unity of purpose, helping to reposition the media as both a development partner and a credible watchdog.
As the NUJ chairman clocks 50, Adigun said the milestone represents a life of service, sacrifice and stewardship, not only to the journalism profession but also to the public it serves.
“At 50, Comrade Akinwale Alade Olanrewaju embodies leadership by grace and vision. His journey is proof of what purposeful leadership can achieve in a short time”, he said.
He concluded by offering prayers for strength, wisdom and greater accomplishments for the NUJ chairman, expressing optimism that the Ogun State Council would continue to grow in unity and relevance.
The tribute was signed by Bunmi Adigun, Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ogun State Council, writing from Iwe-Iroyin, Abeokuta.
