Abeokuta, Ogun State – Senator (Prof.) Iyabo Olusola Obasanjo has issued a firm and direct response to critics focusing on her appearance, asserting that competence, not aesthetics, will define her governorship ambition ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking during a radio appearance on Paramount 94.5 FM, the former senator dismissed commentary on her fashion choices as irrelevant to the serious business of governance.
“My fashion sense is not what will ensure effective governance in Ogun State, but rather my skills and capabilities. I am vying for the position of Governor, not participating in a beauty pageant”, she stated.
Iyabo Obasanjo emphasized that her candidacy should be assessed on her professional track record, strategic vision and administrative competence, rather than superficial considerations.

She further clarified that her ambition is rooted in a commitment to deliver impactful leadership, stressing that the governorship race is “a serious pursuit of political reform, not a runway show”.
Beyond the rebuttal, Obasanjo used the platform to outline key policy priorities, particularly in the education sector.
She highlighted the critical role of teachers in national development, calling for improved training, motivation and remuneration.
She also underscored the importance of supporting members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), especially those deployed to schools, noting their significant contribution to the education system.
In addition, the governorship aspirant advocated a stronger focus on entrepreneurship and vocational skills development, positioning them as essential tools for youth empowerment and economic growth in Ogun State.
Iyabo Obasanjo further urged government and stakeholders to increase investment in education while also strengthening key sectors such as healthcare, agriculture and enterprise development.
Her remarks fortify her growing profile as a policy-driven and reform-oriented contender, with a campaign increasingly centered on governance capacity, human capital development and inclusive economic progress.
