The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, has suspended the Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Ogun State Chapter, Sekinat Salam and the Financial Secretary, Charity James, over allegations of misconduct and financial impropriety.
The suspension was announced in a communiqué issued at the end of the NUJ’s Monthly Congress held on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at the Iwe Iroyin Press Centre, Abeokuta, following deliberations on the report of the Union’s Ethics and Disciplinary Committee.
According to the communiqué, Congress expressed strong dissatisfaction with the initial investigation into allegations surrounding the opening of a bank account in the name of NUJ by some NAWOJ executive members, describing the probe as inadequate and lacking depth.
“Congress noted with concern the failure to investigate the roles of the bankers and relevant state government officials involved, as well as the circumstances under which a cheque issued in the name of NAWOJ was lodged and used to open an account in the name of NUJ”, the communiqué stated.
In response, Congress resolved to suspend the NAWOJ Chairperson and the Financial Secretary with immediate effect, pending the outcome of a fresh and more comprehensive investigation to be conducted by a newly inaugurated Ethics and Disciplinary Committee.
The Congress further directed the NAWOJ Vice Chairperson to assume full responsibility for the association’s affairs during the suspension period to ensure continuity and administrative stability.
Beyond the NAWOJ issue, the Congress also reaffirmed the dissolution of all standing committees of the Council, extending the decision to include all Caretaker Committees of Chapels, notably the Ogun West Independent Chapel.
It consequently directed that all official correspondence from affected chapels must henceforth be routed through the NUJ Secretary.
The Congress also ordered the conduct of bye-elections within two weeks to fill vacant positions across the Council and its chapels, including the position of Council Treasurer, as well as vacancies in the Correspondents’, Federated and NTA Chapels.
NAWOJ was similarly directed to conduct a bye-election to fill its vacant Treasurer position.
In a separate resolution, Congress congratulated the government and people of Ogun State on the 50th anniversary of the state’s creation, commending Governor Dapo Abiodun for the commissioning of road projects across the state, while urging members to commence payment of 2026 dues and practicing fees without delay.
The communiqué was signed by Emmanuel Oke, Chairman of the Communiqué Drafting Committee; Morenikeji Sobaloju, Secretary of the Committee and Bunmi Adigun, Secretary of the Ogun NUJ.
