Ogun, UNICEF Partner Against Measles-Rubella, Set to Deploy 8,000 Workers

Ogun State Government has assured residents of full funding and logistics support for the forthcoming Measles–Rubella (MR) vaccination campaign, scheduled to run from January 27 to February 5, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen child health and prevent vaccine-preventable diseases across the state.

The assurance was given by the Deputy Governor, Engr. (Mrs) Noimot Salako-Oyedele, during a meeting of the State Task Force on Primary Health Care held at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, where key stakeholders reviewed preparedness for the statewide immunisation exercise.

Salako-Oyedele, who chairs the task force, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to the campaign, stressing that the state government would “do everything necessary” to ensure its success.

“The request for funding has been made, and we are confident it will be approved promptly to enable us to meet our responsibilities in this very intensive exercise”, she said.

She commended the Ministry of Health, health sector stakeholders and development partners, particularly UNICEF, for their continued support, including the provision of ambulance boats to improve healthcare access in riverine communities.

According to her, these interventions have helped sustain a resilient primary healthcare system despite operational challenges.

The Deputy Governor acknowledged concerns raised in reports presented at the meeting and assured that they would be escalated to Governor Dapo Abiodun for urgent attention.

She also called on religious institutions, Community Development Associations (CDAs), women groups, the National Orientation Agency and the media to intensify public sensitisation, urging greater use of social media platforms and influencers to reach parents and young people effectively.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker, described the task force meeting as a strategic platform to review the performance of the state’s primary healthcare system and align efforts ahead of the immunisation exercise.

She applauded development partners, community-based organisations and religious leaders for their sustained collaboration with the government, particularly at the grassroots level.

Also presenting, the Executive Secretary of the Ogun State Primary Health Care Board, Dr Elijah Ogunsola, disclosed that most local governments recorded improvements in key health indicators in 2025, although some setbacks remained due to infrastructure and logistics gaps.

Dr. Ogunsola revealed that the measles–rubella campaign would span 10 days and target children aged nine months to 14 years, describing it as one of the widest age-range vaccination exercises ever undertaken in Ogun State.

He added that over 8,000 health workers would be deployed across schools, health facilities and communities to ensure comprehensive coverage.

Speaking on behalf of development partners, UNICEF representative Mrs Moloku commended the Ogun State Government for prioritising primary healthcare delivery, noting that the initiative aligns with the global objective of eliminating preventable childhood diseases in Africa.

She assured of UNICEF’s continued technical and financial support toward the successful implementation of the campaign.
