Ogun Journalists Honour Former Governor Ibikunle Amosun at 68

  • Wasiu Adekunle Adejumo | Premier World News

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, has congratulated former Ogun State Governor and ex-Senator, Ibikunle Amosun, on the occasion of his 68th birthday, describing him as a visionary leader whose legacy continues to shape the state’s development trajectory.

In a statement jointly signed by the Chairman, Comrade Wale Olanrewaju and Secretary, Comrade Bunmi Adigun, the Union lauded Amosun’s tenure as governor, noting that his administration’s “Mission to Rebuild” agenda redefined Ogun State’s architectural outlook and economic direction.

The NUJ said Amosun’s leadership left a lasting imprint on the Gateway State, particularly in the areas of infrastructure development, urban renewal and fiscal reforms, which repositioned Ogun as an emerging industrial hub.

“As a Union, we recognize Senator Amosun not just as a political titan, but as a visionary leader whose tenure as Governor redefined the architectural and economic landscape of the Gateway State”, the statement read.

The journalists’ body also highlighted Amosun’s relationship with the media, describing it as one built on mutual respect and an appreciation of the role of the press in deepening democracy and promoting accountability in governance.

According to the NUJ, the former governor consistently demonstrated openness to the media and upheld transparency throughout his years in public service, fostering constructive engagement even during challenging political moments.

The statement further recalled Amosun’s role in strengthening Ogun State’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), noting that the fiscal discipline and reforms introduced under his administration helped move the state towards financial self-sufficiency.

Beyond governance, the NUJ described the former governor, popularly known as the “Akonni of Owu Kingdom”, as a compassionate leader whose philanthropic activities and continued concern for the welfare of the people remain evident long after leaving office.

The Union also acknowledged Amosun’s legislative contributions during his time in the Senate, citing his focus on national security, economic stability and constituency development, while portraying him as a bridge-builder within Nigeria’s complex political environment.

“As he marks this milestone of 68 years, we acknowledge the grace of God upon his life and pray that the Almighty grants him continued strength, wisdom, and good health as he remains a vital voice in the Nigerian project”, the NUJ stated.

The Union urged younger leaders to draw inspiration from Amosun’s work ethic and his “Ogun Standard” philosophy, which emphasizes quality, durability and pride in public service.
