Ogun PDP Rejects ‘Dissolution’ of State Executive, Insists Tella-Led Exco Still Valid

The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has rejected reports claiming that its State Executive Committee has been dissolved, describing the development as misinformation intended to destabilise the party’s structure in the state.

The party’s leadership, led by State Chairman Abayomi Tella, said the current executive, elected in September 2024, remains constitutionally recognised and cannot be dissolved barely one year into its four-year tenure.

The rebuttal followed reports suggesting that the party’s national leadership had dissolved the Ogun State executive with immediate effect.

Speaking at a press briefing at the party secretariat in Abeokuta, Tella dismissed the claim, insisting that the state leadership remains intact.

“The present executive members of the PDP in Ogun State were elected on September 24, 2024. By virtue of the party constitution, particularly Section 47, Subsection 1, there is a four-year tenure, out of which we have only used one year and a few months”, he said.

Constitutional Argument:

The Ogun PDP chairman argued that the party’s constitution provides clear procedures for disciplinary actions against state executives, noting that none of the stipulated infractions had occurred.

“If you also look at Section 58, Subsection 1, paragraphs A to N, which stipulate infractions before punishment can be meted out, nothing like that has happened in the PDP in this state”, he said.

Tella maintained that the party in Ogun has remained peaceful despite political developments within the national opposition landscape.

“We have been very peaceful. However, this is a period of politics, and all sorts of things are bound to happen. But to our team members in Ogun State, we want to assure you that nothing has happened. The excos remain intact and will continue to remain intact”.

Party Statement:

In a separate statement signed by the Ogun PDP Publicity Secretary Kayode Adebayo, the party described the reported dissolution as a “distasteful innuendo” circulating on social media.

The statement said the alleged dissolution exists only “in the imagination of some individuals”attempting to create disaffection within the party.

According to the party, the executive committee inaugurated on September 24, 2024 remains the only legitimate leadership recognised by the party’s National Executive Committee.

“The current Ogun State PDP Executive under the chairmanship of Hon. Dr. Abayomi Tella remains the only legitimate organ of our great party in Ogun State”, the statement said.

Wider PDP Context:

The development comes amid ongoing internal tensions within the Peoples Democratic Party across several states, where leadership disputes and factional alignments have surfaced as the party attempts to reposition itself ahead of the 2027 Nigerian general election.

Premier World News reports that the internal stability within state chapters will be critical for the PDP’s efforts to rebuild its organisational strength and electoral competitiveness in key states.

2027 Outlook:

Despite the controversy, the Ogun PDP leadership expressed confidence in the party’s electoral prospects, insisting it will remain a major contender in future elections.

“We will participate in the election in 2027. We will be on the ballot, and we will win the election”, Tella said.

The party also urged members to remain calm and avoid being distracted by rumours while national reconciliation efforts continue within the opposition party.
