Ogun 2027: Momentum Builds for Iyabo Obasanjo as State Eyes First Female Governor

Abeokuta, Ogun State – Growing political momentum is building around Senator (Prof.) Iyabo Obasanjo as stakeholders across Ogun State increasingly align behind the prospect of electing the state’s first female governor in 2027.

This position was strongly articulated in a widely circulated opinion piece by public affairs commentator Adewale Ademide, who described the development as part of a broader historical pattern in which Ogun people, across Egba, Ijebu, Yewa and Awori, have consistently led progressive political and social transformations.

“The people of Abeokuta, Ijebu and, indeed, the Yewa and Awori lands have long distinguished themselves as pacesetters and history-makers within Yorubaland,” Ademide wrote, emphasizing the region’s legacy of innovation, leadership and socio-political advancement.

According to him, the current political climate reflects a renewed collective will to “make history once again”, this time through the election of a female governor, a move he described as both symbolic and reflective of evolving values around inclusion and gender equity.

At the centre of this emerging political movement, Ademide noted, is Iyabo Obasanjo, whose governorship ambition is “steadily gaining momentum” across the state.

“Her emergence represents not just a personal political journey but a broader movement driven by hope, inclusivity and a desire for transformational leadership”, he stated.

The article further highlighted the organic expansion of Obasanjo’s support base, cutting across Ogun’s major blocs, as evidence of a shifting political landscape.

“The organic growth of her support base across all regions of the state underscores the Ogun people’s readiness to embrace a new narrative”, Ademide added.

While acknowledging that rival aspirants may attempt to counter the rising tide, the writer maintained that the momentum behind Obasanjo’s candidacy appears “resilient and difficult to suppress.”

Premier World News notes such assessments align with recent developments across the state, where increasing grassroots engagement, elite alignment and gender advocacy movements are converging to reshape the conversation ahead of the 2027 election.

The push for female political leadership has also gained traction nationally, with growing advocacy around gender inclusion and representation in governance.

Notably, Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has consistently encouraged greater participation of women in politics.

Ademide further framed the moment as a continuation of Ogun’s long-standing tradition of producing trailblazers and record-setters across sectors.

“Indeed, the history makers are at it again, and Ogun State stands on the brink of yet another defining moment”, he concluded.

For many analysts, the convergence of cultural legacy, political momentum and gender advocacy positions Iyabo Obasanjo as not only a formidable contender but also a candidate increasingly viewed as central to a potentially historic transition in Ogun State’s political evolution.
