Dr. Tunde Lemo, former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and prominent Ogun State political figure, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of veteran sports journalist, Alhaji Hakeem Akintunde, describing his death as a profound loss to Ogun’s media community.
In a statement shared on his authorised Facebook page, Dr. Lemo paid tribute to the late Director of Programmes at Ogun State Television (OGTV), acknowledging his immense contributions to broadcast journalism and sports reporting.
“It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that I mourn the passing of Alhaji Hakeem Akintunde, a veteran sports journalist whose professionalism, dedication and passion for the media and sports defined a remarkable era in Ogun journalism”, Lemo stated.
Alhaji Akintunde, widely respected within media circles, was laid to rest at the Sunnat Muslim Maqbara (Cemetery) in Abeokuta, drawing attendance from government officials, media executives, professional colleagues and community leaders who gathered to honour his legacy.
Dr. Lemo described the late broadcaster as a mentor and beacon within the profession.
“The late Akintunde’s commitment to the broadcasting craft, his insightful commentary and his mentorship to generations of broadcasters made him a beacon in our media community”, he added.
According to Lemo, the burial marked “the end of a life committed to excellence in broadcast journalism”, while affirming that Akintunde’s legacy would continue to inspire practitioners across the state and beyond.
The former apex bank executive extended his condolences to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), the management and staff of OGTV, as well as the deceased’s colleagues, friends and family.
“May Almighty Allah grant him Aljannah Firdaus and comfort all who mourn this profound loss”, Lemo prayed.
Akintunde’s passing has drawn tributes from across the media and political spectrum, with journalists, public officials and civic leaders acknowledging his decades of service and dedication to sports journalism in Ogun State.
His death marks the close of a distinguished chapter in the state’s broadcasting history.
