In a renewed push for environmental sustainability and public health awareness, the Lions Club International-affiliated Lions Club Abeokuta Glitz on Thursday carried out a large-scale sanitation exercise at Kuto Market, mobilising traders and residents in a grassroots campaign for cleaner surroundings.

The initiative, which drew active participation from market stakeholders and members of the public, extended beyond routine cleaning to include targeted sensitisation on proper waste disposal and environmental hygiene, issues increasingly linked to public health outcomes in densely populated commercial centres.

Speaking during the exercise, the Club President, Lion Olonade Yusuf, emphasised the direct relationship between environmental sanitation and community well-being.

“A clean environment is not just about appearance; it is a critical safeguard against diseases and health challenges. When we keep our surroundings clean, especially in markets like this, we are directly protecting lives and promoting healthier communities”, he said.

He urged traders to adopt sustainable sanitation habits, stressing that environmental responsibility also carries economic benefits.

“When an environment is clean, it attracts more customers, encourages confidence in buyers, and ultimately boosts sales for traders. Cleanliness is not just a responsibility; it is an investment in better living and increased prosperity”, Yusuf added.

In a forward-looking declaration, the club president revealed that the sanitation campaign forms part of a broader strategic roadmap for 2026, aimed at deepening community impact through structured interventions.

“In 2026, we are set to roll out life-changing, sustainable projects and empowerment programmes that will directly benefit the public. Our commitment is to create lasting impact and improve lives across our communities”, he affirmed.

Also speaking, the Club Secretary, Lion Rasak Ramon Abiodun, reinforced the public health implications of environmental neglect, noting that consistent sanitation practices remain one of the most effective ways to curb disease outbreaks.

“A clean environment is fundamental to healthy living. It is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of diseases and ensure the well-being of our people”, he stated.

The outreach aligns with the global humanitarian objectives of Lions Clubs International Foundation, which prioritises health, environmental protection and community development across over 200 countries.

Thursday’s exercise at Kuto Market stresses the Lions Club Abeokuta Glitz’s growing role as a proactive civic actor in Ogun State, leveraging volunteerism and community engagement to drive behavioural change at the grassroots level.

With a clearly defined vision for 2026, the club is positioning itself as a catalyst for sustainable development, public health advocacy, and community empowerment across Abeokuta and beyond.
