“Nigeria Has Lost an Exceptional Soul” – ‘GNI’ Pays Tribute to Segun Awolowo

Honourable Gboyega Nasir Isiaka (GNI), Member of the House of Representatives for Yewa North/Imeko-Afon Federal Constituency, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Mr. Segun Awolowo, describing his death as “a profound loss of an exceptional soul” to Ogun State and Nigeria.

Mr. Awolowo, grandson of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and former Executive Director/CEO of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), died on Thursday, 20 November 2025, at the age of 62.

In a heartfelt tribute on Friday, Hon. Isiaka said the late Awolowo embodied “the finest qualities of the Awolowo lineage”, noting his integrity, intellect and unwavering commitment to national development.

“Segun Awolowo’s passing has left me devastated beyond measure. We have lost a brother, a friend and an associate whose presence enriched every life he touched”, GNI stated.

He lauded Mr. Awolowo’s leadership at the NEPC, crediting him with expanding Nigeria’s trade opportunities across Africa and elevating Nigeria’s influence in continental economic discourse.

He also recalled Awolowo’s tenure as President of the National Trade Promotion Organisations of ECOWAS member states, describing the recognition as “earned through demonstrated excellence rather than inherited privilege”.

Hon. Isiaka also highlighted their collaboration on initiatives to position Ogun State’s border communities for economic advantage under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), praising Awolowo’s “strategic clarity, profound knowledge and practical wisdom”.

“The Awolowo family has lost a devoted son, his wife and children have lost a pillar and Nigeria has lost a patriot whose contributions will echo long into the future”, he said.

Hon. Isiaka prayed for strength for the bereaved family and eternal rest for the late statesman, stating that “his life, though concluded too early, leaves an indelible imprint on our nation”.
